Scouting possible service project – July 8, 2009

school-2

Today we looked at a school in the village of Colonia Libertad in northeastern Costa Rica. This small two-room school has 59 students and four teachers. The school sits on a fenced lot that includes the school, lunchroom building, a makeshift soccer field with no goals, and only four swings. Looking at the school as we pulled up, right away I could tell something was missing. “Where do the students play?” is a question I asked myself.

Learning about the school and its students gave us many ideas as to how PLAY it Forward could improve the lives of these children and leave a lasting impression on the community. Girls are the majority in this small school and while the boys attempt to play soccer on the dirt field, they don’t have much to do during recess. PLAY it Forward is looking to put together a project that includes building a playhouse and/or other activity equipment for the students to enjoy together.     -school-colonia-libertad
